Your Goldsmid Team

Yo ur Labour and Co-operative Team for Goldsmid Ward includes Councillor Melanie Davis (right) and Lis Telcs. To find out how to contact them see our Contacts page. Melanie wishes to thank all those who voted Labour during the 2007 election, see here for more.

Surgeries go mobile

Labour Goldsmid Councillor surgeries are going mobile from 2008. On the first Saturday of every month Cllr Melanie Davis will leaflet a small area of roads in advance with my details before calling on residents to talk to them to discuss the local issues that concern them. Full details of Surgeries are here. All are welcome. The two Conservative councillors do not hold surgeries.

Traffic and Transport

Traffic calming and safety initiatives for pedestrians are one of Labour's top priorities for Goldsmid Ward, focussing on the area near Seven Dials and the Clarendon community.

20 is Plenty Campaign for roads west of the Dials.

BHASVIC road safety improvements will be built sooner than expected after Goldsmid Labour Councillor action.

New Road in Brighton opened in summer 2007 after environmental improvements. Already the vision of a pedestrian-friendly street in the middle of Brighton's cultural quarter has been realised. It's a great place for spending time, with lots of seating, eating and drinking.

Labour delivered a new pedestrian crossing on Old Shoreham Road. Your local councillors supported the campaign by residents for the crossing. We first petitioned for it back in 2003!

Melanie Davis explains why the Labour-led City Council invested in pedestrian improvements at Palmeira Square.

Food Safety: See the Scores on the Doors

Did you know you can now look up restaurants and view their hygiene scores as awarded by the City Council's Food Safety Team. See the City Council's Food Safety ratings here.

Communal Bins Decision

A Cabinet meeting on 18 September 2008 will decide whether to install new communal bins in local streets. The meeting is open to the public. We will continue to campaign to ensure residents have their objections and views heard about where these bins are being placed. Opposition to the bins is as high as 70 per cent in some streets. Did you know that Tory Brighton & Hove City Council is planning to introduce communal bins to over 500 roads with little consultation for any of the 27,000 households affected?

Councillor Melanie Davis has been campaigning both in the Argus and locally for more consultation and would like to hear your views. Full Story on the bins here.

Missing Tory Councillor is failing Goldsmid residents

Find out about your absentee local Conservative Councillor in Goldsmid and other local news in our latest residents' newsletter.

Tory Budget - Worst Fears Confirmed

Cuts to services for vulnerable young people, massive hikes in parking charges, and a failure to keep a manifesto promise to keep Council Tax down. There is more on Simon Burgess' website here Tory Budget 2007-8.

Sunday Library Opening Call

Labour councillors have questioned Tory Brighton & Hove City Council's failure to open the City's Jubilee Library on Sundays despite an election pledge. See also Nancy Platts' Sunday opening campaign on her website here.

Caring for Goldsmid's Environment

In Goldsmid Labour campaigned successfully for doorstep recycling and supporting green initiatives.

Save the Trees: Labour Goldsmid Councillors brought Network Rail's destruction of trees in Goldsmid to the attention of Environment Committee. Residents are continuing their campaign for a coppicing alternative.

BHASVIC Field: see the latest on the hockey plans.

Green travel plans for Hove residents, including in Goldsmid Ward, will encourage more sustainable ways of getting about and are coming down your street soon.

A Seafront-to-the-Downs cycle route is being implemented with part of the route running through the ward. Since this article was written much of the route is now in place, running up the Drive from the seafront.

Car clubs encourage responsible car use in the City, we are want to see them expanding into Hove.

Waste and Recycling

Improving recycling and reducing waste are among Labour Councillor Melanie Davis' priorities in Goldsmid Ward and in the City as a whole.

Recycling goes weekly in parts of Goldsmid Ward. Labour Councillor Melanie Davis is pictured recycling the Argus left. Thousands of homes in the City are now being covered.

Recycling boxRecycling campaign: we are campaigning for doorstep recycling in the 'hard to reach' parts of Hove - and there's good news. Melanie Davis has also written an article for the site about getting into the recycling habit.

Join our '20 is Plenty' campaign for safer streets

Look out for a new petition on a campaign for a 20mph speed limit in our local streets. Councillor Melanie Davis and Lis Telcs are campaigning for a legally-enforceable 20mph limit for residential streets. To view the full article and download a petition go here.

St. Ann's Well update

Goldsmid's magnificent green space, St. Ann's Well Gardens, won another Green Flag Award in 2007:

The Friends of St. Ann's Well Gardens held a successful centenary celebration event in May 2008. For photos of the event and future plans visit their site here: http://stannswellgardens.co.uk/

Schools

Congratulations to Somerhill Junior School which was rated a good school with outstanding  features in the latest OfSTED report. Inspectors said that  all 27 aspects of care and education were good or better. And the arts, PE and modern languages were just some of the subjects considered outstanding. Congratulations to all staff, parents and children.

Hove's new secondary school catchment area came into force in 2008 and is set to stay. The Conservatives voted against the plans - though now they are in control of the Council they are keeping the catchment system. Every Hove child has an equal chance of attending one of the town's two secondary schools. Goldsmid parents campaigned for the a fairer, catchment-based system. Labour ward councillors consistently supported a fairer deal for local families.

Crime and Anti-Social Behaviour

Latest 2008 crime figures locally and nationally are encouraging but we want to maintain momentum with the two Goldsmid Local Action Teams and other local initiatives.

Clarendon Local Action Team is celebrating three years of achievements in tackling vandalism and anti-social behaviour, and improving the local environment. Now we are campaigning for the approach to be extended across the whole of Goldsmid.

See the difference the Action Team has made in Ethel Street and Conway Street, where trees have replaced abandoned cars and rubbish.
