20 is Plenty in Goldsmid Residential Streets (September 2008)Look out for a new petition on a campaign for a 20 mph speed limit in our local streets. Councillor Melanie Davis and Lis Telcs are campaigning for a legally-enforceable 20 mph limit for residential streets near Seven Dials. Melanie and Lis have launched a mass petition for all the roads suffering from rat-running through from Old Shoreham Road to Cromwell and Davigdor Roads. The main cause of road deaths is the speed of road traffic. Nine out of 10 pedestrians will be killed if hit by a car travelling at 40mph, but only one in 40 will die if hit at 20mph. Evidence from safety zones in London suggest that 20mph limits can reduce casualties by up to 60 per cent. The roads west of Seven Dials have long been subject to speeding traffic. The petition will be presented to Council in December this year. “Residents are particularly concerned that speeding motorists are not aware of the number of small children living in this residential area,” adds Melanie. Please contact us if you would like to add your name to the petition, we can drop round for you to sign it. Or if you are interested in collecting signatures you can download a pdf version of the petition here. For further information please email melanie.davis@brighton-hove.gov.uk.
